Offered at Neighborhood Academy of Music on Tuesdays at 10:45am-11:30am for a one time registration fee of $25.00 and monthly fees of $50.00 for ease of budgeting.

Get ready to sing, play, and move with your little one in this high-energy music class designed to be just right for children under two years of age. This new Kindermusik curriculum focuses on your child’s beginning movement, helping to build the muscles your baby needs to walk, and vocal development, helping to nurture your child’s speaking and singing voice. With a mix of both parent-child joint activities and child-focused activities, you’ll be able to join right in on all the singing and dancing while also getting the chance to observe how your older baby or toddler learns on her own. Embark on Kindermusik’s fun new exploration of singing, swaying, laughing, and playing through Sing & Play, a just-right mix of early-childhood vocal play and language development, together time, and music and movement activities!

Our 4 week units will continue year round and as long as you are enrolled you will also be eligible for any Playdates or Special Occasion events at no additional cost! 🙂

Ebook/Reading with your baby/toddlers

Concepts/Ideas: Reading with babies, incorporating reading into your day, babies’ vision, pointing, voice inflection, routines. This activity can include baby at computer, but print-out and audio are both in Download Center for those who prefer not to bring baby to computer. Physical books available for optional buy-up by parent in the US; by educators in other countries.

Baby Talk/Communicating with your baby/toddler

Concepts/Ideas: Vocal play, language development, signing, touch, face-to-face, back-and-forth, visual expressions, mouth movements.

Video Field Trip/Listening and Watching

Concepts/Ideas: 30-45 seconds of video exploration related to theme (e.g. train, bird). This activity invites baby to computer briefly, but print-out images and audio are both in Download Center for those who prefer zero screen-time.

Movement

Concepts/Ideas: Parent-driven movement ideas. On floor w/parent on back, child on knees; tummy time ideas; rocking, holding, flying, hammocking, dancing while facing or facing away, bouncing, etc.

Fingerplay/Toe Tickle/Nursery Rhyme

Concepts/Ideas: Illustrated or video steps for a specific fingerplay, toe tickle, or nursery rhyme.

Object Play/Props

Concepts/Ideas: Featuring mirrors, balls, fabrics, rattles, textures, surfaces, varied environments, etc.

Routines & Rituals, Day-to-Day

Concepts/Ideas: How to make an interactive learning experience out of day-to-day activities like folding laundry, going to the grocery store, things to do during a car ride, bath time, waking up, going to sleep, meal-times, in restaurants, meeting strangers, etc.

Music

Concepts/Ideas: An activity with music front-and-center. Featuring instruments, songs, singing, steady beat, pitch, etc.

Mom and Dad, is your kindergartener so ready to start school that you need something this week fun to do that feels a little like school? Something that has the elements of fun and games mixed with some sure to get your child ready for school activities? How about Kindermusik Adventures Around the World?

Tuesday-Friday, August 25th-28th from 8:00am-11:30am we will be exploring the music, dance, culture, games, and instruments of Japan, Germany, England, Africa, and Mexico. We will certainly have FUN as we become world travelers! Activities will include singing, dancing, storytelling, game playing, pretend play, crafts, instrument making, and food and culture exploration. Children will receive a home CD of the music we explore, a notebook of information including picture folders of activities, and songs from each country, a map placemat to help us find each country in our world, instruments and crafts from each country, and a carry bag with travel stickers and a passport to mark our journey! Every day I teach Kindermusik is a day I see growth and success in the faces of young children and their parents.

 This evening in our second Away We Go class the entire group of children and their parents were so engaged and having fun. Our ‘train’ zoomed and crawled and stopped and started and whistled and dinged it’s way around and around. Even the shy ones became so involved. I must get the camera out again to capture some of this fun! During music and movement storytime you would have thought Shiney Dinah was right there in the midst of our class. The children were mesmerized during the story and already many of them are choo, chooing and tapping the beat to our train rhythm on every page. We hid and found egg shakers, car keys (specially made for class) and jingle bells over and over. I hid the keys on top of my head and wouldn’t you know that was a favorite place for all the keys to be found! Dancing was also fun! This is going to be a great semester!

Newborns to 18 months
Hop on the hayride—it’s time to head for the farm! In the first unit of Kindermusik Village, will will sing songs about the farm, engage in rituals and playful activities for baby and caregiver, including infant massage, lap bounces, exercise, and quiet time. During our second unit, we will stop and smell the roses—and lily of the valley, and tulips, and pansies as we play and move together to songs about spring. At Home Materials include 2 CDs of beautifully arranged songs from class, 2 fun and beautifully illustrated board books, and 2 age-appropriate instruments for music-making at home.

18 months – 3 years

Hop on the train, get in the car, board the plane, and Away We Go! This delightful unit focuses on transportation, a favorite topic for toddlers who are on the go, go, go! Explore fast and slow, smooth and bumpy, and high and low. Read stories about ways to get around. Move, play, and sing together in developmentally appropriate activities created just for 1 1/2 to 3-year-olds. At home materials include 2 CDs, a Home Activity Book, 2 storybooks (Shiny Dinah and Giddy-Up!), 2 harmonicas, and a train carrying box.

3 – 5 years

What’s more exciting to a preschooler than a new toy? How about an entire Toy Shop full of toys! This unit is focused on creating a stimulating musical environment that integrates music, pretend play, story telling movement, and more. Toys I Make, Trips I Take introduces the musical environment of a remarkable toy shop, filled with boats, trains, balls, jack-in-the-box and many other toys that bring a glimmer into a child’s eyes. Each week provides your preschooler an uninterrupted session of imaginative play that’s guided in a very specific, sequential way—with a special Family Sharing Time with you in the last 15 minutes of class. At Home Materials include two CDs, Family Activity Book, Toy Shop play set, a drum, two beautifully-illustrated storybooks and a backpack.

newborn – 7 years

Make Way For Music

In Make Way for Music, families will sing, dance, and move their way through an exploration of several elements of music: beat and rhythm, concepts and contrasts (such as staccato and legato, high and low, the major scale, and arpeggios), the human voice, instrument families, and ensemble. They’ll engage in developmentally appropriate activities that the whole family can enjoy together, including fingerplays, songs, circle dances, story time, and family jam. In their At Home Materials, families will receive two fingerdrums, one Sing, Play, & Grow home activity guide, two children’s storybooks (Drum Circle and Animals on Parade), a hand puppet and finger puppet of Rex (the lion member of Family Time’s Jellybean Band), and an instrument-matching board game. Get the family band together, and Make Way for Music!

January – Rhythms of the Land 4-6 years

In class we’ll explore the rhythms and sounds of Native American music. As we investigate, compare, and contrast a wide variety of drums and the materials they’re made from, your preschooler develops the investigative vocabulary she’ll need in the sciences. When you repeat that learning pattern at home and share the activities in your Student Kit, your child gets an early start in math, too. Student Kit includes jingle stick, CD, and mini-literature magazine. February – Sounds AboundThis month we’ll use a new instrument: our bodies. In class we’ll explore all the sounds we can make with our mouths, our bodies, and our own two hands. With your Student Kit find instructions for instruments made from found objects around the house and play along with the music. Do so and your preschooler develops an early understanding of technology and how one material can be used to make something else. Activities in your Student Kit help you bring these big ideas home when you take part in the listening, turn-taking, and sound-effect making activities.  Student Kit includes CD and mini-literature magazine.March – Dance With MeThis month, we’ll feature the music and dance of “one-two” rhythms, and “one-two-three” rhythms. In class, we’ll hear real instruments from the ballet and learn a few dance steps, too. Activities like dance, where your child follows a short sequence of instructions, helps to strengthen memory and his ability to follow directions. At home, play the CD in your Student Kit and let your preschooler show you a new step or two. Student Kit includes lumi stix, CD, and mini-literature magazine.

Sign & Sing 6 months-3 years

Session A: Everyday items around the house—a ball, bubbles, mom and dad—become the objects of learning in the classroom and at home. You’ll teach parents the sign language methods of the experts, such as making the sign in front of a child, on a child’s body, and knowing when a child is most engaged and ready to learn. All assembled in this easy-to-understand format so you can open your teacher’s kit, and be in the classroom teaching with confidence.

Session B: This session reviews the first three Keys to Signing Smart Success and provides an in-depth look at the final and fourth Key. New concepts such as in and out, up and down, big and little, tall and short will be explored with more songs and animal-themed activities.

Smart Moves, Smart Learning!

Here’s a “foundation of learning” (which we educators call “FOL”) .

 Smart Moves

Did you know that stimulation of the calf muscle aids in language development? Put your child on the floor in front of you so that you can bicycle her legs. Then flex their feet and have your child just push against your hands as hard as she can. I think they just have fun trying to be as strong as you! But the work is good for their brains as well. It actually aids in the language development of children. Why? This information is in Carla Hannaford’s book Smart Moves, Why Learning Is Not All In Your Head.  I recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn more ways to stimulate learning.

This kind of stimulation of the whole body is why children need to be jumping, running, climbing, twirling, singing and dancing and playing in free, joyful situations. And this is why Kindermusik is such a good investment…your dividends increase exponentially.

Dancing and Singing Cockatoo reminds me of our Paco!

We have had many pets through the years. One of my girls favorites was a  Grey Cockatoo we called Paco. He was raised from an egg by my brother and he and his wife brought him from Florida for my girls. He lived for 12 years.

Watching this Cockatoo Dance and Sing reminded me of what a terrific pet Cockatoo’s can be. ..This is a video of a medium sulphur crested Eleanora cockatoo named Snowball living at the Bird Lovers Only Rescue in Schererville, Indiana.Snowball loves the Back Street boys and has taught himself to dance to their song “Everybody.”

Expert secrets to raising “great kids”

Anyone who has bonded closer with a baby while singing a lullaby or witnessed the pure joy of a movin’ and groovin’ toddler will be intrigued by a growing body of scientific evidence indicating that music plays an integral role in child development. A 2001 University of Valencia study traced the connection back even further, noting that “children who were played music in the womb showed more rapid development” in traits such as speech, gross and fine motor skills, and the ability to imitate faces. Another study found that kids as young as 3 could interpret emotional messages of songs.


“Children want to feel close and in emotional rhythm with their parents,” says child development expert Greenspan.


We wanted to learn more about this fascinating link, so we sat down with two people who are well-versed on the topic of kids: singer-songwriter Laurie Berkner and child development expert Stanley Greenspan.

Berkner, 38, recently was dubbed “the pixie Pied Piper of kid rock” by “Entertainment Weekly.” Her music videos air daily on Noggin, a commercial-free cable channel for preschoolers. The former preschool music teacher is now in bookstores with an illustrated version of her 1999 song, “The Story of My Feelings.”

Greenspan, 66, a clinical professor of psychiatry and pediatrics at George Washington University Medical Center, also has a new book out, “Great Kids: Helping Your Baby and Child Develop the 10 Essential Qualities for a Healthy, Happy Life.”

The two shared their thoughts on why music is so important for children — and for their parents.

USA WEEKEND: Dr. Greenspan, what role can music play in raising “great” kids?
Greenspan: Great kids have a number of qualities, including empathy, creativity, emotional range, and a sense of morality and caring about others. It begins with that engagement, that rhythm between the baby and the caregiver — often the mommy — in the first year of life. Then it blossoms in the second and third years with more complex social interactions. When language comes in, they can give voice to what it means to be happy or sad. So a song like Laurie’s helps them understand what a happy feeling or a sad feeling is. You’ll see it in their doll play or action-figure play. This helps them with empathy and creativity. If they’re going to be great novelists or write songs or perform, they have got to understand the feelings of others.
Berkner: It’s so great to hear you say it that way. When I wrote “The Story of My Feelings,” I was having a fight with a friend and wrote it to help me get in touch with my feelings. So actually, it was a completely self-centered act! I wrote the song a long time ago about how I feel better after I express myself, which is true. But now, I might have written it a little differently, because it also feels good to be expressing myself, not just afterward. But in hindsight, I do see that, “Yeah, the song can really help kids connect with their feelings.”

USA WEEKEND: Is it important for parents to sing and dance with their kids?
Berkner: It’s really about enjoying interaction with your child. It creates more of a connection with the caregiver, especially if feelings are coming up through the music. If I’m going to get down and play with Lucy [her 3-year-old daughter with husband Brian Mueller, 39] while she’s listening to a song, and she’s jumping around and I seem to be enjoying it, too, I’m validating her experience.
Greenspan: Children want to feel close and in emotional rhythm with their parents. It’s like when you’re with a good friend or someone you love very deeply. There’s a rhythm to the intimacy that makes you feel secure about yourself and the world. Listening to music brings people close; they’re sharing an experience. It’s an essential part of the development of empathy, of relating to others and emotional range.

USA WEEKEND: Laurie, parents of children with autism and other special needs have told you that your music helped their kids express themselves, while other methods have failed. Any thoughts as to why?
Berkner: The kids seem to want to be able to sing the songs. I’ve had lots of parents say that the first real words out of their children’s mouths came through stringing all these words together. Or they draw a picture to express that they want to hear a song. I wish I understood it better, but I like the fact that it happens.
Greenspan: What Laurie says is very, very important. I, and many of my colleagues, have a whole program for children with autism and other special-needs conditions called the Floortime approach. The essence is to follow the child’s lead and interests [during play] to form a relationship. From there we build communication. We found that some of the kids are very gifted musicians. The part of their brain that processes music functions extraordinarily well.

USA WEEKEND: Both of you make the case for learning through music, dance and creative play. Why?
Greenspan: When you move, you experience more fully. The more coordinated you become, the more you’re able to enjoy movement. It enforces the creativity of using your body, whether through dance or music. But now there’s a movement toward more impersonal forms of communication, from rote learning in education to parents being told to use flashcards rather than creative play with their kids to the overuse of text messages or hours of isolated self-absorption rather than being with real people.
Berkner: I think kids who are sitting at a computer are missing the physical component that they get through music and dancing. When they’re watching television, there’s at least a possibility they’ll get up and dance and let feelings come out. Think about “jumping for joy” — it’s the way we talk about our feelings sometimes. All of that seems to be so connected to being able to express ourselves.
