It is festival time in Johnston County! Last week was the Strawberry Festival in the Cleveland community, this weekend is the Ham and Yam Festival in Smithfield, two weeks down the road will be the Acorn Festival in Four Oaks, Johnston County Relay for Life is May 30th and the first weekend in June is Millstock Music and Art Fair in Clayton. All of these are family friendly events with lots of FREE things to do, FREE music to listen to, homemade goodies to eat and lots of causes to support. I particularly like to support the Johnston County Relay for Life event as it reaches so many local people who are cancer survivors and families still healing from losing someone close, to cancer.  These family events are reminiscent of times gone by. Sitting in lawn chairs or a blanket on a grassy slope listening to local talent, or looking at the creativity of children who have decorated yams for the “What is that Yam Thing?” contest, or seeing the teamwork of a group of people out to support their friends and family in raising money to help a special cause… take some time folks to smell the flowers, talk a walk through the arts and crafts booths, and enjoy some ham biscuits, rib sandwiches, yam fries, or something else homemade and delicious. Get away from the high gas prices, rush of the work week and stress of making ends meet and enjoy each other! That’s what I will be doing… 🙂 Julie

The band, Five for Fighting, is generously donating $0.49 to Autism Speaks each time this video is viewed. The funding goes toward research studies to help find a cure. When you have a moment, please visit the link below to watch the video and pass it along. They are aiming for 10,000 hits, but hopefully we can help them to surpass this goal. http://www.whatkindofworlddoyouwant.com/videos/view/id/408214

Your smile counts. The more smiles you share, the more we donate. Join in!

Autism Speaks created a music video of the Five for Fighting song, “World”, which features images of autistic children and their families. It is a truly moving video and was the work of Bill Shea. The band is generously donating $0.49 to Autism Speaks for each time the video is viewed – the funding goes toward research studies to help find a cure. When you have a moment, please visit the link below to watch the video and pass it along to your friends and family.  They are aiming for 10,000 hits, but hopefully we can help them to surpass this goal.  http://www.whatkindofworlddoyouwant.com/videos/view/id/213154

Spring break was needed, taxes were completed, a little organizing was done and a little rest was accomplished. Don’t you think it is hard to get everything done? I know I do.

Anyway, the count down to the end of semester is here and next week the 7th Annual Fred Smith Charity Challenge. I am coordinating the children’s stage and a booth for our studio and am looking for helpers! The date is April 28th and there are all kinds of opportunities for volunteers just let me know if you are willing!

This year’s Charities are Habitat for Humanity, Johnston County Disabled American Veterans, Johnston County Artists in the Schools, and Riverwood Middle and Elementary Schools. I hope to see you there! For more information link to http://www.fredsmithcharity.com

Relay for Life is one of my favorite charity activities

Here is a link to my personal fundraising webpage for Relay for Life. You may donate here and send me an email if it is for sponsorship of luminaries.  http://www.acsevents.org/johnstoncounty/juliekstewart

My Johnston County Relay for Life team is asking for sponsors. All sponsors are recognized with their names on the T-shirt that is a part of the Relay for Life Experience for the year that they sponsor. The T-shirt is a wonderful advertisement as every participant gets one and additional shirts are sold. To be a sponsor you contact a Relay for Life participant (me) and fill out the sponsorship form and pay your amount. You may chose between the following sponsorships…Bronze – $300 or more; Silver – $600 or more; Gold – $1,000 or more, Platinum – $1,500 or more; Platinum Plus – $2,500 or more.  Premier$5,000   Sponsors are at top back of shirt.  Sleeves are $7,500.   The larger the sponsorship, the larger the print!

You may also chose to buy luminaries in honor or in memory of someone who has had or has cancer. They are $10.00 each and will circle the Relay for Life path surrounding the lake at JCC.

The Johnston County Unit of the American Cancer Society will hold its 24-hour “Relay for Life” fund raising event beginning at 2 PM on Friday, June 1st and continuing through 2 PM Saturday, June 2nd 2007 on the back campus of Johnston Community College.  The first and last laps of the event are dedicated to cancer survivors who are honored in a special opening ceremony at the stage area at 6 PM on Friday night.  Luminaries may be purchased in honor or memory of loved ones and will be lit Friday evening at dusk in a special luminaria service you will not want to miss!  Entertainment will be ongoing throughout the event at the stage area so bring your lawn chairs!  Bring your tent & sleeping bag and stay all night if you’d like!  The closing lap and ceremony will begin at 1:00 PM Saturday and is also dedicated to survivors. It’s a community event to help find a cure for cancer and we do need your support!!  Each lap walked is a “Lap of Love” in honor or memory of someone.

Our county goal this year is $525,000! If you would like to support Relay for Life contact me by commenting  on this post and I will get back to you with what to do!  Sincerely, Julie Stewart
